Went to the Burbank library and painted this statue of its founder, you know he was a dentist?! -as a gentleman repeatedly alerted me of this fact multiple times throughout my art venture at the bench. I've also been visiting all the studios around LA just to see 'em- Cartoon Network is actually by the library and Nickelodeon is just up the road and go a little further you hit Disney Animation and head on out more you're in Dreamworks!

As for plein airing, I really gotta get a pochade box + tripod  or something soon because sitting in random places isn't cutting it; ants here are super aggressive!- still prefer them though to florida mosquitos.

Astro Boy after Ashley Wood, and drew a cherry on my desk- looks metallic...oh, and- this is oil! on mixed media paper. Usual warm-cool combo: burnt sienna and ultramarine. Really wanted viridian cad but it's about $100 for the two of the small tubes they come in, bah.

So, for those who keep up with this blog, you'll know I've moved to Los Angeles. Very cliché to say I've moved here to find myself, but in a way I guess that's what sort of happens when you have "nothing to do"- no school, no homework, nothing you're supposed to be doing other than sustaining your living. Just living your life.

Right now just working a day job while I try to figure out exactly what I want to do. I'm also interning at this fashion design place that's been a pretty cool experience, working with others and what not- mostly doing graphic design work, linesheets, lookbooks, office stuff, etc.

I also started painting again. People always say do what you love and although I like boarding, painting has always been my favorite thing, I just kinda stopped doing it because didn't see it as a viable way to make a living- unless you go post-modern or what have you- which is cool but it's not what I love. 

Anyway, a really rad friend invited me over to Sony Animation to visit since she's interning there and it really reminded me of why I got into this thing in the first place. All the art work on the walls, the really nice people, the fun activities, just...so cool. Guess I've gotten kind of jaded, which is a terrible thing to say on a somewhat public forum like a blog (never know who's reading, etc), but for posterity- I really do want this to be out there somewhere.

Again, still kind of playing it by ear, thinking about going into art education. In Miami I used to volunteer at the Miami Children's Museum and everyday was so rewarding, helping those kids was just awesome. 

After that visit to Sony Animation, I was really inspired to do stuff. Which lately I haven't because I've been somewhat frustrated with myself. I went home grabbed some brushes and did these things. All done in casein on mixed media paper- kind of a oil/gouache crossover (milk protein bind!). Really fun to use, but I wouldn't use it after it's caked- much more fun out of the tube.

Shifting gears

Drawing is fun, but painting is even more fun!

Really loving corel painter because it's basically exactly like traditional painting, but even better. If you need a more saturated color or a darker/light value, all it takes is shifting over a dial. Also, unlimited paint? viridian included?! Multiple palettes and even a mixing pad?! -rad.

Digipaint

I want to get better at lighting which kind of means messing with value. However, I want to do it digitally. So, I'm going to approach it the same way I've done traditional oil painting and start with simple black & white studies then move on to limited palette.

The first one is a Morandi study who I used to study from when learning traditional oil painting. The second is just messing around with colors from life. Lately we've been getting advice from professors to experiment more and get out of comfort zone, so here goes:

Fall Remnants

Couple of last bit of things from last fall. This is from a plein air class I took with Robert Hunt. Really awesome painter and he actually started out as an illustrator, so he hasn't been doing landscapes all his life but his paintings are still so great.

Biggest thing I got from his class is the the affirmation of emotion in art. I've talked about this before with the the Murch book and talking about gesture drawing, but from what I got from Hunt and going through this experience is that, it's the same for painting. A painting that took you about...an hour or two can have just as much, if not more life than something that took six hours. It's about being honest in what you see; authenticity.

Took acting this semester with Kate Duffly and when we were doing our improv classes this same concept came up. Doing the first thing that comes to your mind, your first thought, your first stroke; raw  emotion. Dunno...
