Bomb Voyage!

Loved the commentary track on this one. Think the reason I love this movie so much is how personal it is to Brad Bird, there's a real sense of auteurship in aesthetics, comedy, and story structure- it really feels like it's one guy spinning this yarn because of how cohesive everything is.

So I'm in LA now staying at this artist housing thing, it's been really rad so far. Haven't been posting much because I've mostly been on the job hunt.

Anyway, I found some time to paint.

Digital Experiments

Exploring the awesome world of painting again and I'm really digging the digital- so much freedom to experiment! Only been using two or three brushes here (2 flats and a fan), with some limited palettes I used to use from my community college days, mostly burnt sienna, ultramarine, and titanium and other variants with the same duo-chromatic-semi-complimentary mix idea (viridian/terra,ochre/ultra, etc). I do want to get into using other colors so got this sweet one from the Gurney blog of: Cad Yellow Light, Winsor Red, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue Deep, Permanent Green, and Titanium White.

The first two are, Dice Tsutsumi studies. Will probably keep on studying modern and old masters, so just look at the tags for attributions. Lipstick and lime are from life and the car landscape is from a Wong Kar-wai film (his lighting is so moody- love it!).

San Diego

Probably going to start posting more of my ramblings on the tumblr since I kinda use this site for more "serious" art reasons. Dunno though, started this blog as a place to collect thoughts and archive my work. 

I guess I'll indulge one last time, uh...currently visiting my sister in San Diego, really cool place and totally "california", as in "The O.C." california, surfers, people on them beach bikes, girls with them hippy headbands, huge glasses, burritos everywhere, and sunny cool weather. 

Digipaint

I want to get better at lighting which kind of means messing with value. However, I want to do it digitally. So, I'm going to approach it the same way I've done traditional oil painting and start with simple black & white studies then move on to limited palette.

The first one is a Morandi study who I used to study from when learning traditional oil painting. The second is just messing around with colors from life. Lately we've been getting advice from professors to experiment more and get out of comfort zone, so here goes:
